SAIC Delivers Two Turnkey Virtual Systems to the U.S. Air Force Medical Support Agency (AFMSA)

Immersive, 3-D Software Platform Provides USAF Deployed and Returning Service Members with Virtual World Family Support and Mental Healthcare

15:07 GMT, March 1, 2011 Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) is delivering two turnkey virtual systems to the U.S. Air Force Medical Support Agency (AFMSA) using SAIC’s On-Line Interactive Virtual Environment (OLIVE) software platform. The two systems provide virtual family support and the use of avatars in delivering mental healthcare to airmen and women on the front lines of combat action to mitigate the familial, societal and emotional effects of war.

The virtual Family Support System includes a military base and customized, three-dimensional (3-D) homes where deployed airmen and women can participate in everyday family life activities like communicating and interacting with family members, helping children with homework, playing games and more.

The Mental Health System includes a virtual reality system for educating USAF mental healthcare providers and individual therapists at Wright Patterson AFB on using OLIVE in family therapy, psychotherapy, post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) assessment, medical triage, mass disaster, domestic abuse and sexual abuse counseling.

SAIC’s virtual world technology enables an innovative, immersive approach to improving warfighter transition from war-zone deployment, and demonstrates leading-edge advances in the delivery of mental healthcare.

Other Benefits:
• Service member interaction with family members in OLIVE can lower isolation from families, enhance societal support, reduce the sense of alienation, and facilitate re-integration, particularly in the case of those suffering from PTSD.
• Use of the OLIVE platform can deliver improved, integrated behavioral healthcare to military personnel and their families at a lower, affordable cost.
• The OLIVE platform provides secure, constant (24/7) and private virtual environments with a wide variety of functions, media, terrains, and features enabling service members and families to engage and interact, privately and safely together, in many activities in different places.
• The OLIVE platform and InWorld Solutions demonstrates a new immersive, clinical behavioral therapy modality of treatment for military personnel and veterans with mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), PTSD and other complex psychological health issues.

“We are pleased to lead the way in developing applications, programs, and systems that deliver innovative, virtual mental healthcare and family support to service members and their families,” said Beverly J. Seay, SAIC Senior Vice President and business unit general manager in Orlando. “This application of OLIVE builds on our award-winning Evocative Training programs that provide immersive, experiential learning for military personnel to meet a variety of difficult training challenges in psychological health, mental and physical resilience, and leadership development.”
