Boeing T-X Headed Toward First Flight

ORLANDO, Fla. — The Boeing-Saab T-X trainer is on track to fly by the end of the year after completing afterburner engine runs last week, Boeing officials said.

Only a few more major tests remain before the plane makes its inaugural flight, said program manager Ted Torgerson during a Nov. 23 interview ahead of the Interservice/Industry Training, Simulation and Education Conference (I/ITSEC).

“We are clicking off all of our test points, we have tested around somewhere around nearly 1,200 test points on the jet on ground tests,” he said.

The next test involves putting the plane, engine running, through the motions of a flight — takeoff, climb and landing — with the aircraft tied down to the runway, Torgerson said. The company will also check how the airplane responds to simulated system failures. After that, a Boeing-Saab board will clear the aircraft for flight, and the Federal Aviation Administration will certify it. Finally, the company will conduct low-, medium- and high-speed taxi tests before flying the jet.

“We’re looking to fly soon, before the year is over” Tom Conard, the company’s T-X capture team leader, reiterated during a Tuesday briefing at I/ITSEC. “And as we’re preparing that jet to fly, our flight crews are training in the training system devices to prepare them exactly what they’re going to see in the jet.”

A second Boeing T-X was revealed to the press during a September rollout ceremony shortly before it went through structural proof tests. The company is currently powering all of the systems on the airplane, will fuel the plane in a matter of weeks and plans to move quickly through tests for an early 2017 flight, Togerson said.

The Boeing-Saab team is competing against one other clean-sheet design, manufactured by Northrop Grumman. Two other teams are banking on less risky existing designs. Lockheed Martin has partnered with KAI to offer the T-50A, a version of the Korean company’s T-50 trainer. Raytheon joined with Leonardo and CAE on the T-100, which uses Alenia Aermacchi M-346 as the basis.

If all goes according to schedule, the Boeing-Saab plane will fly around the same time as the US Air Force issues its final request for proposals, which officials have targeted for a December release. The service has already put forward several draft request for proposals, which detail threshold requirements as well as objective requirements that could knock hundreds of millions of dollars off a company’s total evaluated price.

Boeing, for its part, has stressed that its clean-sheet design was tailored specifically for the threshold requirements, and officials have not detailed how close it can get to the objective.

« We’re going to meet all the requirements and growth provisions for the future,” Conard said. « It has no radar, it has no weapons, it is not doing anything except advanced fast jet training. »

Asked whether Boeing plans to incorporate such features for potential opportunities currently under discussion by the Air Force — such as an exercise of light-attack aircraft that could inform a program of record, or a proposal to hire industry to play the aggressor role in training exercises — Conard demurred.

“We’ll look at that after we win T-X,” he said. “We’ve got to win T-X, and then from there we will able to adapt and work in future variants. And I’ll leave it at that.”

Teaming to Pursue Canada’s Joint UAV Surveillance and Target Acquisition System (JUSTAS) Program

SAN DIEGO and MONTREAL, CANADA – 25 May 2011 – General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA‑ASI), a leading manufacturer of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS), tactical reconnaissance radars, and surveillance systems, and CAE today announced that the companies have signed an exclusive teaming agreement to offer the Predator® B UAS to meet Canada’s Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition, and Reconnaissance (ISTAR) needs.

Under the program presently referred to as the JUSTAS program, the Canadian Government will establish a requirement to field and support interoperable, network-enabled UASs to provide ISTAR and all-weather precision-strike capabilities in support of its operations worldwide.  GA-ASI and CAE will jointly compete for this program, with GA-ASI serving as the prime contractor supporting a U.S. Foreign Military Sale (FMS) procurement.  The teaming arrangement between GA-ASI and CAE is designed to offer the best combination of experience and proven capability to meet program and Canadian-specific requirements while reducing technical, cost, and schedule risks.

As the first-tier Canadian subcontractor, CAE would have overall responsibility for a comprehensive In-Service Support (ISS) solution, including operator and mission training systems; integration with Canada’s existing Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (C4ISR) infrastructure; systems engineering support; and lifecycle and integrated logistics support services.  CAE would also have responsibility for assembling a pan-Canadian team of companies to develop and support any Canadian-specific requirements and content for Canada’s national ISTAR capabilities.

The aircraft has a maximum gross takeoff weight of 10,500 lb/4763 kg, is powered by a Honeywell turboprop engine, has a maximum altitude of 50,000 feet/15240 meters, and can stay aloft for up to 30 hours.  Currently operational as MQ-9 Reaper with the U.S. Air Force and Royal Air Force and as MQ-9 with the Italian Air Force, Predator B provides unparalleled close air support and persistent situational awareness to coalition forces, demonstrating proven NATO interoperability.

CAE lorgne un contrat pour des véhicules de combat

(Montréal) CAE fera équipe avec l’entreprise américaine Force Protection dans l’espoir de remporter un contrat de plus de 1,5 milliard pour la fourniture de 600 véhicules de combat pour la défense canadienne.

«Si nous l’emportons, nous aurons deux rôles, a indiqué la porte-parole de CAE, Pascale Alpha. Premièrement, nous fournirons le même genre de services de soutien que nous fournissons présentement pour les CF-18 à Mirabel et pour les hélicoptères maritimes dans les provinces de l’Atlantique. Deuxièmement, nous mettrons en place une équipe d’entreprises pancanadiennes pour répondre aux exigences du contrat.»

En juillet 2009, le gouvernement conservateur a annoncé son intention d’acquérir divers types de véhicules blindés pour remplacer ou compléter les véhicules utilisés actuellement par la Défense nationale. Ottawa entend notamment acquérir 500 véhicules blindés tactiques de patrouille afin d’effectuer des missions de reconnaissance et de transporter des troupes. Le contrat sera assorti d’une option pour 100 véhicules additionnels.

Plusieurs entreprises se sont déjà qualifiées pour participer au processus formel d’appel d’offres pour ces véhicules blindés de patrouille, dont Force Protection, Textron Marine and Land Systems, BAE Systems et Thales. Ces entreprises sont maintenant à la recherche de partenaires canadiens pour participer au processus d’appel d’offres parce que le gouvernement canadien exige des retombées industrielles régionales équivalentes à 100% de la valeur du contrat, évalué à plus de 1,5 milliard sur une période de 25 ans.

Si l’équipe Force Protection-CAE remporte le contrat, la part de CAE représentera environ la moitié de cette somme. Ce contrat permettrait de créer ou de conserver 250 emplois chez CAE, notamment à Mirabel, Montréal, au Nouveau-Brunswick et en Nouvelle-Écosse.

«Ce sont des emplois liés notamment aux logiciels et aux systèmes d’ingénierie impliqués dans les services de soutien», a spécifié Mme Alpha.

Le gouvernement devrait lancer l’appel d’offres en juillet 2011 et devrait attribuer le contrat au premier trimestre de 2012.

Montreal, Canada, March 23, 2011 – (NYSE: CAE; TSX: CAE) – CAE today announced it has been awarded a series of military contracts in more than 10 countries and valued at approximately C$100 million, including: a contract with the United States Navy to build P-3C training devices for the Taiwan Navy; a contract with the United States Navy to perform a major upgrade on an MH-60S operational flight trainer; subcontracts from Lockheed Martin to provide maintenance and support services for several C-130J customers; and contracts with both Canada’s Department of National Defence and Defence Research and Development Canada for a range of professional services and e-Learning courseware.

United States Navy/Taiwan Navy

CAE USA has won a United States Navy contract to design and manufacture a suite of P-3C training devices for the Taiwan Navy. The contract was awarded to CAE USA under the United States foreign military sale (FMS) program. Under terms of the contract, CAE USA will design and manufacture a P-3C operational flight trainer (OFT) as well as a P-3C operational tactics trainer (OTT). The P-3C OFT will be a Level D equivalent flight simulator and used to train the pilots and co-pilots of Taiwan’s P-3C Orion maritime patrol aircraft. The P-3C OTT will be used to train the sensor operators in the P-3C aircraft. Both training devices will be delivered to Taiwan in 2014.

United States Navy

The United States Navy has contracted CAE USA to perform a major upgrade on an MH-60S operational flight trainer located at Naval Air Station (NAS) North Island. This MH-60S OFT was designed and manufactured by another contractor, prior to CAE beginning work on the MH-60S program in 2004 following a competitive procurement. CAE will now provide a range of simulator upgrades to this MH-60S OFT, including software updates, new control loading, enhanced instructor operator station and addition of forward-looking infrared (FLIR) image generators. The MH-60S helicopter is used by the U.S. Navy for airborne mine countermeasures, combat search and rescue, anti-surface warfare, vertical replenishment and carrier plane guard.
Lockheed Martin

Under subcontract to Lockheed Martin, CAE will continue providing a range of maintenance and support services for several C-130J customers worldwide. In the United States, CAE will provide maintenance, logistics and engineering support services for the U.S. Air Force C-130J Maintenance and Aircrew Training System program.  CAE will provide a range of support services including maintenance and integrated logistics support for the CAE-built C-130J training devices operated by the Aeronautica Militare Italiana (Italian Air Force) at the National Training Centre in Pisa, Italy. Finally, CAE will provide contractor run maintenance and support services for the Royal Air Force’s C-130J training systems located at RAF Lyneham under a program called the UK RAF C-130J Hercules Integrated Operational Support.

Canada’s Department of National Defence (DND) and Defence Research and Development Canada (DRDC)

CAE was recently awarded the Aircraft Technician Training Models contract by the Canadian DND. Under this contract, CAE will develop interactive, Shareable Content Object Reference Model (SCORM) compliant courseware in support of aircraft technician e-Learning programs.

CAE’s professional services team was also awarded a contract to provide operational research and analysis support services to Canada’s DRDC Centre for Operational Research and Analysis (CORA). Under this contract, CAE Professional Services will assist CORA in providing timely, expert and objective advice to the Canadian Forces and to DND on core issues of strategy and policy, force development, capability production and acquisition, force generation, force employment, and security science. DRDC’s Centre for Operational Research and Analysis will leverage CAE’s technical and management consulting expertise in the areas of concept development, experiment and exercise design and implementation, modelling and simulation, and operational research and analysis.

CAE awarded contracts valued at approximately C$50 million for four Level D full-flight simulators plus four CAE Simfinity trainers

Montreal, Canada, March 14, 2011 – (NYSE: CAE; TSX: CAE) – CAE today announced that it has sold four Level D full-flight simulators (FFS) as well as four CAE Simfinity™ trainers to airline customers in Asia and Europe. Lufthansa Flight Training (LFT), a wholly owned subsidiary of Lufthansa Airlines, has ordered a CAE 5000 Series Airbus A320 FFS as well as three A320 CAE Simfinity integrated procedures trainers (IPT); Xiamen Airlines, based in The People’s Republic of China, has ordered two CAE 7000 Series Boeing 737NG FFSs as well as a CAE Simfinity Virtual Maintenance Trainer; and an A320 FFS has been sold to an undisclosed airline in Asia, for delivery in the second half of 2011.

The contracts are worth a total of approximately C$50 million at list prices and bring the total number of FFS sales that CAE has announced to date during fiscal year 2011 to 27.

Delivery of the A320 FFS and IPTs will take place before the end of 2011 to LFT training centres in Europe. Lufthansa has purchased more than 30 CAE Level D simulators since 1980, including four CAE 5000 Series FFSs. LFT has embraced the CAE Series 5000 technology for their A320 and Bombardier Dash 8-Q400 training programs.

Xiamen
Delivery of the first Boeing 737NG FFS and the Virtual Maintenance Trainer to the Xiamen Airlines training centre in Xiamen will take place before the end of 2011; delivery of the second FFS will be determined in the future. Both FFSs will feature the CAE Tropos™ -6000 visual system.

Two CAE-built FFSs for the Boeing 737NG configuration, delivered in 2008, are currently being used for training by Xiamen, as well as a CAE Simfinity IPT and a CAE Simfinity Virtual Simulator for the Boeing 737NG plus a Virtual Maintenance Trainer for the Boeing 757.

CAE closes acquisition of CHC Helicopter’s training operations and becomes CHC Helicopter’s training provider

Orlando, Florida, USA, March 4, 2011 – CAE (NYSE: CAE; TSX: CAE) and CHC Helicopter, a global leader in helicopter services, announced today, at the eve of Heli-Expo 2011, the closing of the acquisition by CAE of CHC Helicopter’s helicopter flight training operations. They also announced the execution of the agreement that will see CAE become CHC’s long-term training partner, responsible for training more than 2,000 helicopter pilots and maintenance engineers as well as providing general training, pilot provisioning and certain types of search and rescue training in support of CHC’s global fleet.

CAE and HAL Helicopter Training Centre Takes Delivery of Dhruv Simulator Cockpit

BANGALORE, India — The Helicopter Academy to Train by Simulation of Flying (HATSOFF), the joint venture owned equally by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and CAE, today announced that its simulator cockpit for the civil/conventional variant of the Dhruv has arrived at the HATSOFF training centre in Bangalore following design and manufacture at CAE’s facility in Montreal, Canada.

The Dhruv simulator cockpit will now be installed and integrated with the CAE-built full-mission simulator currently in operation at HATSOFF. The simulator features CAE’s revolutionary roll-on/roll-off cockpit design, which enables cockpits representing various helicopter types to be used in the simulator. The cockpit for the civil/conventional variant of the Dhruv is the second for the HATSOFF training centre, and will be ready-for-training in May 2011. The first cockpit for the simulator represents the Bell 412 helicopter. Training for Bell 412 operators commenced in July 2010.

The CAE-built full-mission helicopter simulator at HATSOFF and the Bell 412 cockpit were certified during 2010 to Level D, the highest qualification for flight simulators, by India’s Directorate General Civil Aviation (DGCA) and the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). HATSOFF expects the cockpit for the civil/conventional variant of the Dhruv to be certified to Level D by the DGCA this spring. Additional cockpits for the Indian Army/Air Force variant of the HAL-built Dhruv and the Eurocopter Dauphin will be added to the HATSOFF training centre over the next year.

The HATSOFF training centre, located near HAL’s headquarters in Bangalore, also features multimedia classrooms, computer-based training, brief/debrief facilities, and a training management information system. The full-mission simulator features a common motion system, vibration platform, and visual display system, along with the four separate cockpit modules that can be used in the full-mission simulator. When a cockpit is not used in the full-mission simulator, it will be used as a fixed-based flight training device (FTD).

CAE USA Awarded US$44 Million Contract to Design and Manufacture Additional MH-60R Helicopter Simulators

TAMPA, Florida — CAE USA has been awarded a contract valued at approximately US$44 million to design and manufacture two MH-60R tactical operational flight trainers (TOFTs) for the United States Navy.

The first simulator will be a fixed-based MH-60R TOFT delivered to Naval Station (NS) Mayport near Jacksonville, Florida in mid-2013. The other MH-60R TOFT, which will also be reconfigurable to the MH-60S helicopter variant, will be a full-motion simulator delivered to the Naval Air Facility (NAF) Atsugi, Japan in the summer of 2014.

The contract includes options to design and manufacture two additional MH-60R TOFTs and could bring the total value of the contract to approximately US$78 million.

An MH-60R TOFT includes both an MH-60R operational flight trainer for training pilots and an MH-60R weapons tactics trainer for training sensor operators and airborne tactics officers. The two training devices can operate independently or networked to provide a total aircrew mission training system.

Under a contract originally signed in 2006, CAE has already delivered two fixed-based MH-60R TOFTs to the Navy that are currently in-service at Naval Air Station (NAS) North Island and NAS Jacksonville, as well as a full-motion MH-60R TOFT that recently entered service at NS Mayport. With this new contract, CAE has delivered or is under contract to deliver a total of seven MH-60R TOFTs to the Navy. CAE has also developed two MH-60R avionics maintenance trainers for the Navy.

CAE is also the prime contractor responsible for delivering a range of MH-60S Sierra training systems to the Navy. Since 2004, CAE has delivered or is under contract to deliver a total of seven MH-60S operational flight trainers and five MH-60S weapons tactics trainers.
